Build an abundant vessel full of rich, velvety shades and interesting shapes which late summer dahlias and early autumn rudbeckias provide. In the Dutch Golden Age these vanities were full of iconography representing the prevalence of Christianity over earthly pleasures and material wealth. Religious artefacts and obvious displays of affluence such as gold, silver and precious stones were forbidden, therefore the landed patrons commissioning the work devised a means by which to convey their riches or moral stance by the use of other objects and an understood code for that which they convey.
